The Illinois Valley Wine Fest was last weekend. What a blast! There were 29 wineries there. Needless to say, I went to bed early that night. =-)
Illinois grapes have a very quick season to grow in, and the only grapes that ripen that quickly are sweet grapes. Most of the wineries here make sweet wines, meads, apple/ciders and fruit wines. Some wineries also import grapes from other locations and make merlots and other tonsil-curling wines.
My favorite is a seasonal wine is ‘Halloween’ from the Illinois Valley Winery – they have a store right in Utica & also do MAIL ORDER if anyone is interested. Their pitch goes like this:
Honey Crisp Apple/pumpkin wine spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and fairy dust.
Yes, we said fairy dust.
Not for sale to Transylvania during the full moon….
Notes: Perfect with snack foods. You’ll be the hit of the party!
I bought 6 bottles =-)
We stayed at one of our favorite campgrounds, Hickory Hollow.
Thanks for visiting & keep on planting!
