E.F.T. – Emotional Freedom Technique and How it Helped Me

E.F.T. or Emotional Freedom Technique, is a relaxation method that involves tapping at specific spots of the body to produce positive outcomes.

First, let me tell you about why I was in need of E.F.T.

About six months after my mother had passed; I began having extreme pain in the left side of my jaw.

I went to many specialists seeking relief from the pain, to no avail. I was given pain medication (oxycodone) anti-anxiety and anti-depressants. My chiropractor helped with acupressure, but my results were only temporary. She then mentioned learning E.F.T. or Emotional Freedom Technique. I found a master practitioner of E.F.T. and learned about the technique.

After about a week of therapy, I was able to stop taking all the drugs, and live pain free.

Now that you understand the “why” my seeking E.F.T., let me tell you a little about the technique itself.

E.F.T. was created by Gary Craig in 1970. He followed the ideas of acupuncture using meridians. There are 12 meridians in the body. E.F.T. involves pressure on certain points in the meridians in its use. There are records of E.F.T helping in many types of health problems, curing all types of anxiety, it has been successful at curing multiple sclerosis and there is also evidence of curing different types of chronic pain.

This is how to do E.F.T.

Start by taking a look at the points we are going to be applying a tapping motion to.


*AP – Arm Pit Point – It is really on the top of the uppermost rib on your torso.


Karate chop point – Tap as long as you feel is necessary to declare your issue.

What we do with the Karate Chop Point.
This is where you declare how you would like to help yourself with. Since we all probably need help in this department, lets choose “public speaking”. Say the following statement, “I know I’ve got a lot of anxiety with public speaking (or insert your issue here), but I love and respect myself.”

We will now go thru the E.F.T.’s tapping pattern (you tube video link) while reaffirming the problem we would like help with. Referring to the above illustration, tap (a gentle tap, don’t pound on yourself!) 3 or 4 times on each area. There is no real order for this specific technique (other, more advanced patterns do have an order). Repeat the statement about what you need help with throughout the tapping pattern. After finishing the 12 points, we will concentrate on tapping on the top of the hand, between the little and ring finger, called the gamut point.

While tapping the gamut point, we will follow these next steps. Look up, look down, round in a circle clockwise, counterclockwise, hum a song (Happy B-day is quick & easy), count to 5, hum a song.

Now that you know the basics of the tapping, you can use this for any type of problem both mental and physical. There are many different pressure points and patterns for more specific problems. For these, you may need to visit an E.F.T. Master.
