Daily Prompt: Always Something There to Remind Me

This is my first post that responds to the Daily Prompt: Always something there to remind me.

In 1982, I was just entering high school and had one helluva attitude that this earth was here for me to conquer. I honestly wanted to be a Rock Star. Not my first choice of careers (I wanted to be a chemist) but I’d just been dissed by my high school. I was told that my math scores were too low to enroll in the chemistry/physics classes I wanted to take. Even with a recommendation letter from my 8th grade science teacher, the fact that I’ve had a chemistry set since age 7, and an offer for me to be pre-tested for the class, I was told no. Dissed for wanting to learn. Maybe I didn’t try hard enough? What I did learn was that sometimes, even when you do give it your all, it’s not enough.

So. Rock Star was the new dream, and I enrolled in chorus instead of science. I could already read music, play flute and had been born with a set of pipes that would make Andrea Bocelli melt from my silky, soprano voice. In music, I never had to prove I was good enough, everyone told me I was!

It was that same year that Judas Priest released their album, Screaming for Vengeance. The track that lives in infamy for me is, “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming”. This song is an upbeat song that basically says (to me):

Don’t let anyone squash your dreams or you’ll have another thing comin’!

One life I’m gonna live it up
I’m takin’ flight I said I’ll never get enough
Stand tall I’m young and kinda proud
I’m on top as long as the music’s loud
If you think I’ll sit around as the world goes by
You’re thinkin’ like a fool cause it’s a case of do or die
Out there is a fortune waitin’ to be had
You think I’ll let it go you’re mad
You’ve got another thing comin’
That’s right here’s where the talkin’ ends
Well listen this night there’ll be some action spent
Drive hard I’m callin’ all the shots
I got an ace card comin’ down on the rocks
If you think I’ll sit around while you chip away my brain
Listen I ain’t foolin’ and you’d better think again
Out there is a fortune waitin’ to be had
You think I’ll let it go you’re mad
You got another thing comin
In this world we’re livin’ in we have our share of sorrow
Answer now is don’t give in aim for a new tomorrow
Oh so hot no time to take a rest yeah
Act tough ain’t room for second best
Real strong got me some security
Hey I’m a big smash I’m goin’ for infinity yeah
If you think I’ll sit around as the world goes by
You’re thinkin’ like a fool cause it’s a case of do or die
Out there is a fortune waitin’ to be had
You think I’ll let it go you’re mad
You’ve got another thing comin’

To this day, I’ve got this CD in my car at all times. At the ready for when someone has rained on my parade, brought ants to my picnic, put bugs in my ointment, threw a wrench in my machine… I think you get the gist.

I didn’t become the Rock Star I wanted to be back in 1982, but in general, I’ve always gotten what I wanted when I really put my back into it. That is the lesson I take away from this song whenever I hear it.

For a giggle, I’m including a Pat Boone version below for all you non-metalheads. In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy is a 1997 album by Pat Boone where he covers  heavy metal songs in a jazz/big band style.

  1. Judas Priest, I think they were the back-up band when I took my sister to see Black Sabbath! That was quite the concert…lots of smoke and vomit!! Do you still sing? I hope so!! Great idea to play this song when life deals you a lemon. Great song!!
